Why WOMXN

Caring about equality shouldn't be a quiet, private thing, so we stitch it onto tees and let it start conversations.

Every collection will give back to a different women led initiative, named at launch, and we'll share what we gave once it's done. We care just as much about how things are made: in Cape Town, in small runs, built to be worn for years. We won't always get it right, but we'll keep listening, learning and telling you how it's going.

A short history

We didn't invent the slogan tee

Women have been wearing what they believe for more than a hundred years. A few moments we think about a lot.

1956

About 20,000 women march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria against the pass laws. It's why South Africa marks Women's Day on 9 August.

1970

Carol Hanisch's essay gives the second wave a line people still use: the personal is political.

1984

Designer Katharine Hamnett meets Margaret Thatcher wearing a protest slogan on her T shirt. The photo goes around the world.

1991

Riot grrrl bands start photocopying their own feminist zines and handing them out at punk shows.

2022
